Sweeper has a brush roller which is mounted in a transverse support (14) which extends between the side walls of the machine frame (1) and is mounted for vertical adjustment relative thereto by means of a slide plate (24) which is located between the support (14) and a lid member (5) of the frame and can be displaced in a straight line transversely to the frame. This side plate (24) has cam members (29) which interact with the cam members (27) on the transverse support (14) so that any displacement of the slide plate (24) is converted into a height adjustment of the transverse support (14) relative to the frame and thus the height of the brush roller is automatically adapted to the surface being cleaned.
