<p>A screw press for splitting logs of wood has a cage (2) with an internally threaded member acting as a nut for a screw (4) with an operating handle (6) at one end. The other end carries a wedge (3) which is forced into the leg. A log to be split is placed immediately ahead of the wedge, located by a strong stirrup (1) attached to the front of the cage. The screw is then turned by the handle, force the wedge into the log. An alternative design uses a ratchet mechanism or power cylinder to move the wedge.</p> |
