A method of making the bodies of metal cans uses strip metal (B) which is rotated between rolls (3, 4) so that the strip is wound helically, and the abutting edges are welded by the beam of a laser (5). The wound tube is then cut into required lengths by the beam of a second laser (11). The width of the strip metal is equal to the diameter of the can body. The strip is passed between upper (3) and lower (4) rolls, the upper rolls act as guides, and the first laser is positioned in the gap between them. The lower roll is the support roll, and is smaller in diameter than the inside of the wound tube. It is grooved centrally at the welding point under the first laser.
|
