<p>Reciprocating IC engine with direct conversion to rotary motion achieves this by having a cylinder (1) with a working chamber (15, 16) at each end embodying the usual valve (9) etc. gear, carrying a transverse output shaft with its axis cutting that of the cylinder and ending in a crank with a throw equal to half the piston (2) stroke. The pin of this crank carries a roller bearing (5, 6) around which rotates a second roller bearing (3, 4) held in the piston, constrained to follow the first by an idler disc (17). Continuity of motion over the crank neutral position is ensured by a flywheel on the shaft, and a pinion on the crankpin engaging with a rack in the piston. Piston/cylinder cross-section need not be circular. Bearings other than roller ones may be used and the motion conversion gear may be fitted outside the cylinder.</p> |
