<p>1485604 Portable containers; container closures; tapping containers C A HERBST 24 Feb 1976 [24 Feb 1975] 07321/76 Headings B8T and B8D A container 10 for topping-up electrical storage batteries has at least one, and preferably three, valved liquid dispensing spouts and an annular seal 44 surrounding and sealed to the, or each, spout, the annular seals being for preventing the passage of air between the, or each, spout and the rim of a battery cell. Each spout has a plastics plunger 15 attached to the container by a plastics retaining nut 13 and is biased into an extended position relative to the nut 13 by a spring 28 acting between a flange 30 on the plunger 15 and a spring seat 31 on the nut 13. A liquid discharge duct 21 and an air duct 27 extend through the plunger 15 which has a groove 16 for receiving an 0-ring seal which seats against a valve seat 17 on the nut 13 when the plunger is extended. The container 10 is preferably of plastics material and is preferably closed, apart from the spouts. The arrangement of the three spouts permits three cells of a battery to be topped-up simultaneously. As the liquid level in each cell reaches the lower end 22 of the respective spout there is a build-up of pressure in the air space above the liquid in each cell due to the fact that the annular seals 44 prevent the escape of air from the cells to the atmosphere. The build-up of pressure stops the liquid flow from the container 10 to each cell in turn thereby preventing overfilling of the first cell to be topped-up as the other cells continue to be filled.</p> |
