1485539 Ion exchange membranes MITSUBISHI PETROCHEMICAL CO Ltd 17 Oct 1975 [21 Oct 1974 25 Feb 1975] 42763/75 Headings C3B C3P and C3R Heterogeneous ion exchange membranes are prepared by mixing finely powdered ion exchange resin with a crystalline polyolefin resin, forming the resulting mixture into a membrane and treating the membrane at at least 80‹ C. with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal or ammonium salt of concentration at least 5 weight per cent. The polyolefin resin may be a polymer or copolymer of ethylene, propylene or butene. The ion exchange resin may be a sulphonated vinyl aromatic/divinyl benzene copolymer or phenol/formaldehyde condensate; or a reaction product of an epihalohydrin or polyglycidyl ether or ester with an amine, or a chloromethylated and aminated vinyl aromatic/ divinyl benzene copolymer or phenol/formaldehyde resin. The salt may be a chloride, bromide, iodide, sulphate, nitrate, phosphate, carbonate or acetate. Examples describe the preparation of membranes comprising polypropylene or polyethylene and sulphonated styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, a hardened reaction product of epichlorohydrin/pentaethylene hexamine condensate and an epoxy resin, an epoxy resin/ amine reaction product or chloromethylated and aminated styrene/divinyl benzene copolymer, and treatment thereof with solutions of sodium chloride, carbonate, sulphate or acetate, potassium chloride or ammonium sulphate. |
