The artificial stone press particularly for making fireproof calcareous sandstone bricks has a frame (1) carrying a ram each end which are forced together during the working stroke each by its own power unit. Both rams (2, 3) include identical piston and cylinder devices (4, 5) which each has a main cylinder (6) and adjacent cylinder (7). The first (6) is a pressure cylinder and the second (7) is a double acting control cylinder for the main cylinder, the whole forming part of a single hydraulic circuit. The frame is mounted on a spindle with its ends (10) passing through bearings (9) mounted in pedestals (8) supported on a base (11) so that the complete frame (1) can be swung from the horizontal to the vertical.
