The power plant for a passenger-carrying omnibus is positioned so as to allow the floor level of the passenger compartment to be at a more convenient lower level and to facilitate the design of the front and rear axis overhang. This is achieved by having the power package (5) located above the passenger compartment in the roof structure (6). The engine (7) is connected to the front and rear drive axles by a first shaft (9) running along inside the roof, a second vertical shaft (11) passing through the passenger compartment and a third drive shaft (14) leading to the axles. The vertical intermediary shaft (11) is fed through, for example, a hand-hold column for use by the passenger.
