Location system for moving vehicle - uses pulsed transmitters of laser and IR light and optical sensor in focal plane of receiver lens

A location system consists of a light receiver, e.g. a four quadrant receiver, mounted on a moving vehicle and locating a transmitter mounted on another vehicle. The light energy entering the receiver lens falls on a multiple sensor element in the focal plane and is deflected to form a circle on the sensor plane. The circle centre point position gives a measure of the deviation of the beam from the optical axis of the lens. The transmitter emits periodically pulsed laser and infra-red light and the angular deviation of the source is evaluated electronically from the sensor output.
