A tubular primer esp. for artillery ammunition comprising a projectile and a charge of propellant, has a back block with a location for a detonator. A combustion bore from the location for the detonator leads to a tubular arrangement fixed to the other side of the back block, in which there is a combustible charge for the priming of the propellant. At least one longitudinal ignition channel passes through the priming charge, extending practically the whole length and parallel to the axis of the tube. The combustible charge includes >=1 cylindrical block inside the tube or there may be two blocks placed end to end and formed so that there is a gap between them through which combustion is transmitted radially outwards. The tubular body has an internal transverse profile surrounding each cylindrical block so as to create >=1 lengthways extending ignition channel, externally to the block. Each block is formed by two symmetrical components joined axially and the tubular body is similarly formed by two shells of moulded synthetic resin, joined axially. The primer may have the form of granules filled into the tubular body with the longitudinal ignition passaged formed by a tube of combustible material down the centre. Ensures a high ballistic yield from the propellant charge by a uniform combustion of the primer throughout its whole length, and a brief and uniform ignition of the propellant. Wear on the artillery piece is reduced and a flame at the mouth of the barrel is prevented, bringing advantages, esp. at night.
|
