1511943 Electrical connector assembly MOTOROLA Inc 19 Jan 1976 [3 March 1975] 01982/76 Heading H2E An electrical connector assembly comprises a housing 12 having an opening 28 and a recess 13 spaced therefrom, a two piece female connector having a first portion 24 that, in use, is situated within the housing 12 for attachment to an electrical component, e.g. flex circuit 29, and a second portion 22 that fits within the opening 28. A male connector plug 26, for detachably interfitting with portion 22, includes a projection 26f which engages in the recess 13 so as to automatically align the plug 26 when entering portion 22, and means facilitating disengagement with the portion 22 upon release of securing means that, in use, secures the plug 26 to the portion 22. As described, female portion 24 has contact terminals 24b that are soldered to circuit 29, each terminal 24b including a pair of lip portions 24c which resiliently engage a respective strip element 22a which pass through the base of portion 22. The base of portion 22 includes a recess 30e in a resilient cover 30f which receives an actuator button 30d. The button 30d is mounted on a leaf switch contact assembly which is biased to electrically connect two substantially U-shaped terminals (30b, 30c) (Fig. 4, not shown). In this position, with plug 26 not engaged within portion 22, the electrical components within housing 12 are employed and the system, e.g. two-way communication equipment, is self-contained. The switch may be opened by depressing the resilient cover 30f by means of an actuator rod 33 (Fig. 5) on the plug 26, which interrupts an internal audio circuit. The plug 26 includes a base portion 26a on which are mounted electrically conductive spring elements 32 each of which has an apex (32a) (Fig. 7, not shown) which makes contact with a corresponding strip element 22a. The natural resilience of the elements 32 is such that when the securing means, e.g. a turn screw or threaded knob (not shown), is released, the plug 26 is disconnected. The wire leads 36a of cable 36 are attached to the spring elements 32, the strain on the cable being relieved by a looped flexible braid 36b which is secured over a post 26b, and by a restraining block 38a which fits over a cable sleeve 38b and is received with a recess 26e. |
