1490909 Oxidation of hydrocarbons ZAKLADY AZOTOWE IM F DZIERZYNSKIEGO TARNOW 9 Oct 1975 [12 Oct 1974] 41521/75 Heading C2C A hydrocarbon oxidation product is obtained by oxidation of a hydrocarbon in the liquid phase and under superatmospheric pressure employing an oxygen-containing gas as the oxidizing agent wherein the prevention of the development of and/or the suppression of potentially explosive conditions in a reaction system is effected by reducing the pressure and/or the temperature prevailing in such system within a time interval of 0À5 to 5 minutes by introducing pressurized cold water into the reactor substantially uniformly upon the surface of the liquid contents of the reactor thereby to cool the liquid hydrocarbon undergoing oxidation in such system to below the boiling point at atmospheric pressure of the heteroazeotrope which said hydrocarbon and/or said oxidation product forms with water or to a temperature at which uncontrolled decomposition of the hydroperoxide which said hydrocarbon forms no longer occurs. The water may be introduced by a spray system or by a system of sprinklers. The oxidation of cumene to cumene hydroperoxide, and of cyclohexane to cyclohexanol and cyclohexanone is exemplified.
