The top of the shaft is covered by a hood from which a bell-shaped combustion chamber is suspended in the upper part of the shaft; the hood has a charging chute and pipes feeding pressurised oil or gas, and air, to the bell, and exhaust gas ducts. The outer surface of the bell and the bore of the furnace shaft form an annular space used for the counter current heating of the descending charge by ascending hot gases from the bell which sinter, calcine and dry the charge. The bell pref. has a conical roof of heat resistant steel fitted with air-cooled anchor tubes holding a refractory lining and bricks in the bell. |
