Cassette locking and release mechanism for a cassette tape recorder lock by moving a plate into engagement with the operating lever of the cassette pocket (4). A magnetic head is positioned on a magnetic head slide and is applied to the cassette when the latter is locked. An intermediate slider (9) is arranged parallel to and is connected to the magnetic head slide (12). It is connected to the magnetic head slide (12) horizontally and form-locked and can be displaced in a vertical direction against spring force (10) via a release key (5). A control lever (25) is arranged on the cassette pocket (4), which supports the intermediate slide (9) when the cassette is swung out.
