Roller tape measure with automatic return of steel measuring tape has band brake comprising spring loaded clamp. The clamp grips into the measuring tape in order to stop the measuring tape in any pulled out position. The one-armed lever forms the clamp and at the inner end the lever bearing side (5) is seated on a shaft (6) parallel to the axis of the tape roller (3). The free gripping side of the one-armed lever passes through the housing side (15) which contains the exit slot (17) of the measuring tape (2). The tape roller (3) is accommodated in the housing.
