Coal shearer haulage system - has cylinders at different pitch from rack to drive machine off tooth flanks by roller fitted rods

The coal shearer haulage device has a rack and engaging members along the face run. Advance drive is by three hydraulic cylinder (6) standing in a vertical plane at right angles to the rack plane (X) so that the rod ends (7) bear against the teeth flanks. The cylinders are at different pitch from the rack or else at a multiple of this pitch and are operated so as to engage only the teeth flanks forming a descending surface in the line of machine travel (2). The horizontal projection of the flanks equals the quotient of tooth pitch and the number of cylinders. Preferably several groups of cylinders are used, each underpinning the rack with a base (8), also fitted with a roller to travel along the rack surface.
