1498229 Outboard motors VOLVO PENTA AB 1 Oct 1975 [2 Oct 1974] 40180/75 Heading B7V An outboard motor drive shaft housing 10 is in the form of a single-piece die-casting having a cavity 38 for an intermediate drive shaft 20 to the propeller 26, a cavity 40 for a cooling water pump 30, and a channel 45 for the propeller shaft 24, the cavities 38, 40 opening to one another to facilitate casting. The motor drive shaft 16 is connected to the shaft 10 through a reversing gear 18 (see Specification 1,498,230), the shaft 20 having a bevel gear 22 for driving the propeller shaft 24. A shaft 28 driven by the shaft 16 passes co-axially through the shaft 20 and is connected to the impeller of the pump 30. Water enters the inlet of the pump through holes 31 in the housing and is delivered through a transition member 33 to a plastics tube 37. The upper end of the tube 37 opens into a transverse arcuate channel 48 which extends around the cavity 38 and is outwardly closed by a cover. From the channel 48 the water flows to the motor 12 through a longitudinal channel 42 whereafter it is exhausted into a channel 44 containing, at its upper end, a double-walled pipe 52 for the exhaust gases from the motor. The cooling water and exhaust gas flow to the surrounding water behind the propeller 26 via the cylindrical channel 45. A removable fin 32 protects the pump. A pillar 50 depending from the hull has a pin received in a metal bush enclosed in a rubber insert located in a cylindrical recess 14 in the housing. |
