Electrode for the electric resistance welding has a longitudinal bore such that the base of the hole is curved with a projection in the centre. The curvature may be circular to elliptical and the projection may have a point or radius. The cooling water leaves the supply tube in a stream and is deflected radially by the curved based of the bore. This achieves a uniform thermal load on the electrode working faces and thereby a longer life for electrodes. More uniform extraction of heat from the electrode working surface is achieved.
