Threads and fibres of acrylic acid polymer, cross-linked and H2O-insol., which can retain >80 wt. % H2O, are obtd. by heating, at 100-200 degrees C, threads spun from an aq. soln. contg. a homogeneous mixt. of H2O-soluble acrylic acid polymer and a cross-linking agent which has, per molecule, >=2 - OH and/or INH2 or -NH- groups, and is pref. a =8C (cyclo)aliphatic or araliphatic cpd., or an aromatic cpd. Pref. at least some of the carboxyl groups in the cross-linked polymer are present as alkaline or ammonium salts. These polyacrylic acid fibres can be mixed with other hydrophobic fibres to produce textile materials with a high capacity to absorb water.
|
