Zones forming part of the walls of metallurgical furnaces and subjected to severe working conditions are cooled via coolant coils built into the wall; and a gas mixed with fine drops of water is fed at high velocity through the coils. The gas is pref. inert w.r.t. the coolant coils, and contains 10-50 wt. % of pure, de-ionised water. Both the gas and the water are pref. recirculated, and the gas pref. travels at 10-100 m/s. The total pressure in the coils is pref. lower than the pressure in the furnace chamber. The pref. plant includes a pump feeding the gas through injectors fed with water; and the mist leaving the furnace is fed through a cooler and a water separator from which the water is recirculated to the injectors. Used e.g. in a furnace wall exposed to molten slag which would normally cause rapid wear of the refractory furnace wall.
|
