Rotary cylinder circular knitting machine needle selector mechanism, includes a programme tape loop which is driven in synchronism with the cylinder and controls movements of selector jacks between active and inactive posns. according to information on the tape sensed by detectors which are stationary and cover the width of the tape. Specifically the tape has lengthwise and crosswise rows of holes and the detectors consist of a transversely inclined light source below the tape and a transverse row of photocells above it, with the cells in circuit with solenoids which operate the jacks. Pref. one photocell controls a drive for the tape. Tape loop provides longer pattern than conventional drum.
