A printing unit is for transferring the image of embossed characters from, for example a card (42) to a form set (10). It first applies a print image to the top sheet of the set and then has pressure applied to the embossed card in order to transfer the image to the other, lower sheets in the set. In the first printing stage an ink carrier (54) is interposed between the card and the set. In the second stage when the image is to be transferred to the other sheets in the set the data card is displaced relative to the set and ink carrier. The necessary pressure is applied by a roller system (50) and is variable. The support surface for the form set has two sections, one (18) is fixed while the other (20) is spring-loaded from underneath.
