Induction air preheating system - has branch pipe with flap valve to select silencer cooling or intake air heating

A casing (6) surrounds the exhaust pipe section (4) between exhaust manifold (3) and silencer (5) to form a gap (7). The manifold end of the casing is provided with a union (9) to carry a tube (9). The tube can be either joined to the air intake filter (2) or have an independent cool air entry assisted by a fan (11). At low environmental temperatures, the tube (9) is connected to the air filter intake to allow exhaust heat to flow into the air intake. At high environmental temp. the tube (9) is connected to the independent fan assisted air intake (10) so that air now flows in the opposite direction to cool the exhaust silencer. An automatic flap valve could be used to select the connection to either air filter or independent intake.
