Dry battery has a conventional zinc casing sealed with a cover made of thermoplastics. The cover is assembled by first coting the edge (9) with an adhesive that is melted by heat. The cover is then pressed over the electrode (7) until the edge contacts its under-surface. Ultrasonic vibration is then applied to the outer edge of the top surface of the cover. This ultrasonic vibration softens the plastic cover so that a groove is formed in its surface by the edge of the casing. At the same time the adhesive is melted and bonds the two parts together.
