1521028 Tampons BIKOMA GmbH SPEZIALMASCHINENFABRIK 22 April 1977 [27 April 1976] 16786/77 Heading A5R A tampon is formed, Fig. 1, by arranging a withdrawal cord 2 with a first portion 2' extending longitudinally of a fibrous mat 1, and further portions, 2", 2"' extending transversely of mat 1, rolling up mat I from end I"' as indicated by arrow A, then, Fig. 2, passing cord portion 2"' through the middle 3' of the rolled up mat to give the partially completed tampon, Fig. 3. The manufacture of the tampon is completed by a pressing operation. In an alternative embodiment, Figs. 4-6 (not shown), the tampon is rolled up with the cord on the outside of the mat. The cord may be laid double on the mat to provide a looped withdrawal cord, Figs. 7-9 (not shown). Two layers of mat may be provided, the cord being sandwiched therebetween, Figs. 10-12 (not shown), and one of the mats may be narrower than the other so that the finished tampon will have a non-uniform density, Figs. 13-15 (not shown).
