Eccentric viscometer for determining the rheological properties of cervical or oral mucus comprises an inner and outer bearing constrained for relative eccentric rotational motion w.r.t each other. A mucus sample is introduced between the adjacent cylindrical surfaces of the two bearings and relative mechanical movement of the bearings, which is related to both shear and displacement of the mucus disposed between them, provides an indication of the rheological properties of the mucus. Determining the rheological properties of cervical mucus during the menstrual cycle to predict the inception and presence of ovulation for conception control.
