Cover for IC engine valve gear or sump - has flange with resilient seal which is compressed by cover fixing screws against vibration

The cover subject to vibration, esp. for valve gear or oil sump in IC engine, has a flange for being fastened to an adjacent housing (7). The flange has a groove (8') contg. a resilient seal which projects from the flange so as to be compressed when screws for fastening the flange are tightened. The cover may be a sheet metal pressing wherein the flange is of U-section. The base of 'U' forms the surface of the flange abutting the housing and contains the groove for the zeal. The U-section flange may be made separately from the cover and connected to it by a resilient layer which may be integral with the seal.
