A process for preimpregnation of tubular textiles (knitted or woven) intended for reinforcing plastics consists in (a) impregnating each element of the textile material with an appropriate resin compsn., (b) drying the compsn. by heating, (c) superposing several such impregnated and dried articles and (d) finally polymerising the deposited resin, esp. by heat and pressure. The treated materials are used, pref. in the shapes of cylinders or cones, in, e.g. radomes, the 'noses' of aircraft and other engines, tail-fins of helicopters, cisterns, pipes, etc., and in the aerospace industry generally. Previous methods of preparing multi-layer impregnated textiles were unsuitable because of costly techniques, e.g. use of devices to rotate the cones during polymerisation, or because of the filtering effect of layers of textiles, giving uneven impregnation. The present method is simple, economic and rapid; and gives semi-finished prods. that are homogeneous and easy to transport, stock and put into use.
|
