A physical training appts. uses a flywheel (11) mounted on a free wheel (7) running on a shaft (5). The flywheel (11) has two radial arms (12) carrying weights (13) which can be adjusted for radial position. A cylindrical housing (4) encloses the flywheel (11) and is attached to the exercise frame by two arms (14) (15). A pinion is mounted on the end of the shaft (5) which meshes with large dia. gear wheels mounted on shafts fitted with chain wheels. These chain wheels are driven by endless chains passing around sprockets mounted on the exercise frame. As the person using the appts. pulls on grips attached to the chains the flywheel is rotated at high speed so that its inertia offers a resistance to the user's exertions and absorbs the energy which he generates.
