Thermal pump producing useful heat or cold - uses ice produced during winter operation to cover summer cooling demand

The heat pump uses stored ice produced during the winter operation to cover the cooling demand during the summer. The plant consists of a conventional heat pump system, where the reject heat of the compressor produced on the condenser is used to produce hot water for heating purposes. The necessary heat for this part of the cycle is drawn in form of latent heat liberated during the solidification of a considerable quantity of water in a tank. The ice thus produced is stored in a bunker for future use. The ice production with subsequent storing takes place at outdoor temperatures of +3 deg.C to 18 deg.C. If the outdoor temp. is above +3 deg.C and the bunker storage capacity is reached, part of the stored ice is melted down by introducing relatively warm outside air into the bunker. Towards the end of the heating season the ice quantity in the bunker is being stored only, as the number of days with temperatures below 3 deg.C steadily decreases.
