Cyclopropane carboxylic ester(s) prodn. - from di:azo-acetate ester(s) and olefin(s), useful as insecticides

Prodn. of cyclopropane carboxylates of formula (I) comprises reacting diazo-acetates of formula N2CHCOOR4 (II) with olefins R1HC=CR2R3 at 20-150 degrees C in presence of metals or metallic catalysts. In the formulae, R1 is is not >4C alkyl or alkenyl (>=1 double bonds), opt. substd. by >=1 halo such as Cl, F or Br: R2 and R3 is opt. substd. alkyl or halo; and R4 is opt. substd. benzyl or heteroaryl-methyl. (I) are insecticides useful in agriculture, protection of stored goods and hygienic applications. They have low toxicity towards warm-blooded animals, excellent residual activity on wood and clay, and are stable on white-washed surfaces. No prior synthesis of a cyclopropane carboxylic acid is necessary.
