Combustibles are oxidised in the vapour phase by an appts. comprising a catalyst bed contg. >=1 combustion catalyst deposited on synthetic inorg. polycrystalline fibres, and a device for leading the gases to the catalyst bed through a diffusion bed. The appts. may be used as a flameless catalytic heater for workshops, greenhouse etc.; the catalyst having a long working life. The catalyst is a specif. a Group VIII metal, esp. Pt. Pd, Rh or a combination of these, opt. used with >=1 oxide of Cr, Co, Cu, Mn or Fe; the concn. of catalyst, expressed as metal being 0.01-10 wt% of fibre wt. in the catalyst bed. |
