The rotor has a laminated rotor core with open or half-closed, essentially axially extending winding slots (3) and a squirrel-cage winding with axially extending conductor rods (4). A conductor rod (4) arranged in each winding slot (3) consists of a radially internal part (5) clamped in the slot and having an essentially trapezoidal cross-section tapering radially inwards and two shoulders (7), which are directed radially outwards and each bear against a tooth, and has a radially external part (6) projecting between the shoulders. The maximum width of the external part (6) is less than the maximum width of the internal part (5), and its radial extent is less than the radial extent of the internal part (5). The external part (6) is separated electrically at least along a predominant range of its radial extent from at least one of the two slot walls by means of a gap (8, 9). In such an arrangement the conductor rods (4) withstand large centrifugal forces and additionally prevent an electrical connection of the rotor teeth (2) bounding an air gap. <IMAGE>
