PREPARATION OF ESTERS OF THIOCARBAMIC ACIDS INVOLVING USE OF PHASE TRANSFER CATALYSTS

Thiocarbamic esters are prepared by reacting a carbamoyl chloride with a mercaptan in the presence of an aqueous solution of an inorganic base and a catalytically active quantity of a phase transfer catalyst. Subsequently, the organic and aqueous phases are separated and the thiocarbamic ester is isolated from the organic phase. A substantially lower concentration of the solution of the inorganic base and a smaller excess of mercaptan are required in the novel process. The reaction is effected in a significantly shorter time.
