Backlash detector for vehicle axles - has pneumatically-operated bearer plates carrying axle load

The backlash detector for vehicle axles consists of a lubrication bay/inspection pit on either side of which are support plates for the vehicle wheels. Each plate is fitted with a set of spring-loaded rollers of suitable construction to allow each plate to bear one half of the axle load. Each plate has guide rails to allow it to move in directions at right-angles to each other. The rails are attached to actuator rods, each of which is connected to a double-acting pneumatic piston. Control devices are provided for each plate which comprise electrically-operated valves, each of which is connected to one end of the pneumatic cylinder. The plates can be moved independently of each other in eight directions, i.e. in X and Y directions and at 45 deg. intermediate positions.
