The high pressure blower has a casing (11) within which there is an impeller (12) with radial blades (17). The impeller discharges compressed gas into the casing from which there is a compressed gas outlet. An inlet cone (20) set into the casing directs incoming gas into the eye of the impeller. The cone terminates in an out-turned flange (21) a small axial distance inside the impeller. Gas flowing in is therefore restricted to a part only of the axial depth of the blades. The front part (26) of the blades is traversed by a recirculating stream (28) of compressed gas. The front of the blade (34) is turned up to provide a smooth entry for this stream.
