<p>Process for drying vegetable material handled in bulk in small pieces, is claimed, e.g. for chopped cereals. The material is conveyed through a number of drying chambers in succession. Pre-chopped vegetable material is pref. crushed to expel sap, then passed through successive chambers of a drier and finally compression-moulded into blocks. A pref. drier comprises a set of horizontal drying chambers, arranged one above another for gravity transfer of material, and enclosed in a common outer shell. Each drying chamber comprises a horizontal tubular, passage rotating about a coaxial supporting pipe which extends end-to-end of the chamber. Rotation of the passage drives material axially through the chamber, pref. by means of inclined annular blades, fixed coaxially to be inside of the passage. A drying fluid, pref. hot air, is blown into each drying chamber, pref. via a common manifold and the supporting pipes which have outlet holes. Each drying chamber shell pref. contains several vertical sets of horizontal drying chambers, the top chamber of each set being fed by a single supply conveyor. Esp. used for drying chopped vegetable crops for the prodn. of fodder. Also drying for preservation such prods. as cereals, fruit and vegetables. High quality prod. may be obtd. from a simple process employing an inexpensive plant installation.</p> |
