Mfr. of lead-acid battery not needing servicing - selects electrolyte retaining properties of electrode and separator materials

The lead-acid battery is designed by choosing the retention properties of the separator material Rs and those of the gas-dissipating electrode Rg such that R>Rs>=Rg is the retention property wrt the electrolyte of the non-gassing electrode. The retention of the negative, gas-dissipating electrode is 70-75% of that of the positive electrode, that of the separator 70 to 80% of that of the positive electrode. This type of battery can be operated in an enclosed casing in overcharge without having to add water.
