A process for the preparation of perfluorinated, polycyclic hydrocarbons in which, as starting material, partially fluorinated, non-aromatisable, polycyclic hydrocarbons are employed and are fluorinated in the gas phase by means of cobalt trifluoride in a two-step process. In the first step of the gas-phase fluorination, the temperature is not more than 50 DEG C above the boiling point of the fluorinated material, and the degree of fluorination, based on the perfluorination, is not more than 75 - 95%. In the second step, the fluorination is continued at a higher temperature to give the perfluorinated, polycyclic hydrocarbon. In this way, a perfluorination is successfully carried out without the cyclic structure of the polycyclic hydrocarbon being opened. The partially fluorinated starting material can be prepared by fluorinating an optionally partially chlorinated or brominated polycyclic hydrocarbon or a derivative thereof containing carbonyl groups, carboxyl groups or hydroxyl groups in the liquid phase. |
