A sheet metal core for a transformer is of three-limb design and has two cut-out sections. It has an outer sheet of shell and it is designed to facilitate the expensive manual processing and manufacture of the sheet metal cores. A transverse yoke is partioned off by means of a joint between both outer limbs (2, 3) with the joint starting at the inner core of the arrangement and extending obliquely outwards from the inner corner in the zone between the connection of the inner and outer corner and the extended inne edge of the outer limb.
