A false key for the door of an item of furniture is permanently fixed within a decorative plate applied to the furniture. It can be of any shape to match the style of furniture to be decorated. The body of the false key (10) abuts onto a decorative panel (12) which is fitted onto the item of furniture to be decorated. The end of the false key has an axial bore aligned with a hole in the decorative panel. An externally ribbed coupling sleeve is received in the bore and hole, the sleeve being internally threaded to receive a screw.
