The telephone has a speech controlled speech direction recognition unit and reception and sending channel attenuation. A certain rest state of sender and receiver amplifier is determined by the speech channel damping controlled by the speech direction recognition unit. An automatic adjustment and comparator unit sets the sender side rest state in accordance with the incoming speech signal level tapped at the loudspeaker or receiver. This is done at high to medium speech level through the speeds direction recognition unit. It sets at the same time mean gain continuously adjusted by a hand operated variable resistor. At low signal level and, therefore, at high attenuation the receiving side rest level is adjusted through the speech direction recognition unit. It controls further the sensitivity of the speech channels whose attenuation and gain are set through the speech direction recognition unit in accordance with the set rest state.
