The system ignites gas planing equipment for a metal workpiece by preheating a set amt. of the metal to ignition temp. Radiation is effected by one or more high-energy electromagnetic rays irradiating the point on the workpiece surface, ignition being produced with an energy flux of more than 1000 watts per sq. cm. There can be a burner directing a current of oxygen to the planing zone of the workpiece and a radiation device to pre-heat the metal. An optical system connected to the radiation source directs radiation from the latter to the workpiece. The source can be of the spot or linear type, the optical system (11, 12, 13) in the latter case transmitting a linear pattern onto the workpiece.
|
