The heavy duty braking system has a brake pad (5) fitted to the wheel (2) and a stationary brake pad (4) mounted on a bracket (1). The fixed brake pad is integral with a carrier (3) which is co-axial with the wheel. The brake is applied by means of a central control rod (10) connected to the brake pedal and actuated by a hydraulic jack. The jack is filled with hydraulic fluid and the additional power is transmitted to the brake pad. The brake is released by a helical spring (9) mounted on a collar on the control rod.
