A device for controlling the movement of the workpiece of a machine tool in two mutually perpendicular directions has two vertical guides (4) for a carriage (5). The carriage (5) also slides on two horizontal guides (9). The movement in both vertical and horizontal directions can be held in any required position by a bracket (15) which rests against a nut (14) forming a stop. The nut (14) can be screwed along the bar (35) to stop the carriage in any required position. If required several such nuts can be used. The bracket (15) is mounted on a hydraulic jack so that it can be pushed outwards to clear the nut (14) and allow the carriage to travel to the next stop.
