The indexing mechanism correctly positions work with profiled periphery, e.g. a gear, delivered into a machine tool chuck by an automatic feed for further machining of the periphery. An indexing pin (13) is mounted radially in relation to the work, moved by auxiliary power both radially and tangentially. The chuck (20), also power-operated, can only be actuated when the pin is in the correct position. The indexing and chucking operation can be fed as a subsidiary programme into a storage and programming unit regulating an automatic system. This comprises a conveyor with loading and unloading station for magazines of workpieces, a handling mechanism transporting the work to and from the machines, and the machines to carry out the operations.
