Guamidine cpds. of formula (I) and their acid addn. salts are new: In (I), X is S or NH, Y is O, S, bond, CH2, SO or cis or trans vinylene; m=0-4; n=1-4, but m is not = 0 if Y is S, O or SO; and n is not = 1 if Y is O or SO; R1 is H halo or 1-6C alkyl; R2 is H, 1-10C alkyl, 1-6C alkanoyl or 7-11C aroyl; A is 3,4-dioxocyclobutene-1,2-diyl or C=Z (Z is O, S, NCN, NNO2, CHNO2, C(CN)2, NCONH2, NCOR3, NCO2R3, NSO2R3 or NR4); B is 1-6C alkoxy or alkylthio or NR5R6. R3 is 1-6C alkyl or 6-12C aryl, R4 is H or 1-6C alkyl, R5 and R6 are each H, 1-10C alkyl, 3-10C alkenyl (double bond sepd. from N by >=1C), 3-8C cycloalkyl, primary 2-6C hydroxyalkyl (O atom sepd. from N by >=2C), 3-10C alkoxyalkyl or alkylaminoalkyl or 4-10C dialkylaminoalkyl, all with the O or second N sepd. from N or NR5R6 by >=2C. A typical cpd. 2-guanidino-4- 2-(3-methylthioureido) ethlithiomethyl thiazole caused no toxic effect in mice when given intrapenitoneally at 73 mg/kg.
