In a multi-needle shaft sewing machine, the shaft selection and change is effected by a stitch width regulator to give the needle shaft body a zig-zag action. The stitch width regulator is operated mechanically or electronically from the housing base, by a linkage or the like, acting either on the needle shaft body or on the individual needle shafts. The design allows the needle shafts, or groups of needle shafts to be used for zig-zag stitching. The equipment is used for stitching fabrics in the form of coupons, continuous or cut fabric sections, in linear and/or spread layouts with single or multiple layers.
