The tractor and trailer brake system consists of a master cylinder (1) actuated by a foot pedal. The master cylinder simultaneously feeds a second cylinder (5) via a hydraulic coupling for the trailer brake circuit. The push rod (2) connecting the foot pedal to the master cylinder piston has a travel limiting surface (9) which bears against a level (7) pivoted (8) to the cylinder housing. The lever thickness can be stepped so that the push rod travel and therefore the braking effect can be selectively limited corresponding to trailer loading.
