1536053 School satchel A GR NBERGER 15 March 1976 [19 March 1975] 10257/76 Heading A4G A school satchel comprises a plastics shell 1, Fig. 1, comprising the back wall of the satchel, and a bag member 6', Fig. 5, of soft material attached on the side of the back wall opposite that which contacts the back of the user in use. As described the shell 1 is moulded to conform to the back of the user by having a vertical groove 12, which widens at its lower end, and has a horizontal ventilating groove 13. Slits 14, 15, 19 are provided to receive shoulder straps 50 adjustable by slides 51, and a retractible handle 17 is also provided. The satchel may include a bottom part 3, and/or a cover part 4, these parts being attached to the shell 1 by means of a U-section ring receiving flanges 11, 31, 41 on the parts and shell, or the parts may be integral with the shell. They may be inter-connected also by side walls. The part 3 has reinforcing ribs 32 and feet, not shown The bag 6', Fig. 5, which may be of Perlon (R.T.M.) fabric is secured to the shell 1 by pressstuds or stud and key-hole slot connections and is closed by a cover, not shown, lockable to the top of the shell 1 or by extending the shoulder straps 50 through the shell 1 and securing them to the outside of the pocket 6' so that they close it when the satchel is lifted by the straps. Alternatively a rubber covering 9, Fig. 11, may close the bag and be secured to the shell 1 by strings or elastic cords co-operating with slits formed in the flange of the shell. A ring-like moulded member may be inserted between the shell 1 and the parts 3, 4, to increase the volume of the satchel.
